SASAqS achievements
Two of the significant achievements of the Southern African Society of Aquatic Scientists.
National Water Act support
Dr Carolyn Palmer led the SASAqS contribution to drafting South Africa’s National Water Act, no. 36 of 1998. The process, which introduced novel ideas such as the Ecological Reserve, is described in her paper Application of ecological research to the development of a new South African water law (Journal of the Benthological Society).
Taxonomic guide
SASAqS promoted and drove a project, funded by the Water Research Commission, to produce the ten volumes of Guides to the Freshwater Invertebrates of Southern Africa.
