SASAqS 2006 Mozambique congress
2006 joint conference “From source to sea”
Maputo, Mozambique — 19 to 23 June 2006.
The members of both SASAqS and the PSSA operate in aquatic environments (fresh, estuarine and marine), so it was decided to co-host the respective annual meetings. Mozambique was selected as the venue to stay in line with the “southern African” nature of both societies; it also receives water from most southern African countries (Namibia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa), hence the theme “source to sea”.
Key themes
- Freshwater ecosystems
- Estuarine ecosystems
- Freshwater–estuarine interface
- Marine ecosystems
- Land–ocean interactions in the coastal zone
- Management of shared water resources
- Aquaculture
- Coastal zone management and conservation
- Catchment management
Report-back from the SASAqS August 2006 Newsletter.
Thanks to Richard, Victor, Piet, Johan, Nico, Wynand, Gordon and their assistants for a most enjoyable conference at the Pestana Rovuma Hotel, Maputo, in June 2006. The venue was very comfortable and the food excellent — the variety of pastries and cakes on offer was staggering, and that was only breakfast. The programme was interesting and varied, with a high proportion of students who gave excellent presentations. Thanks to the Water Research Commission, which made funds available for student support.
The conference was combined with the Phycological Society, which worked well given the common ground between the two societies. A generous sponsorship of Laurentina beer ensured that many discussions carried on well into the night. Most managed to squeeze onto the RAU bus to visit the Ncomati estuary at Macaneta, followed by an obligatory seafood dinner at the legendary Costa do Sol.
