SASAqS Achievements

Here we note two of the significant achievements of the Southern African Society of Aquatic Scientists.

National Water Act support

Dr Carolyn Palmer led the SASAqS contribution to drafting a new South African water act, the National Water Act, no. 36 of 1998. Details of this process, which included novel ideas such as the Ecological Reserve, are in her paper, Application of ecological research to the development of a new South African water law (Journal of the Benthological Society).

Taxonomic guide

SASAqS has promoted and driven a project, funded by the WRC, to produce the 10 volumes of Guides to the Freshwater Invertebrates of Southern Africa.
